My current designs
are inspired by origami, the art of folding paper. I first became interested in origami when I was taught how to fold paper birds as a child. The process of folding an object from a flat piece of paper, the transformation from two dimensions to three has always fascinated me since then. It was only until the final year of my design course that I rediscovered my interest in folding. I wanted to design objects that showcase origami as something other than a past time for children and I was interested to see what potential folding had when combined with the functionality of everyday objects.
I am interested in what origami techniques can offer and its challenges when applied to functional objects. |
The challenge lies in adapting a form from paper to modern materials while still keeping the integrity of the folds. Hopefully my objects will expand peoples' minds about origami, in that it is not constrained to just animals and flowers.
The Fold Lampshade is an example of applied origami. The lampshade is made from polypropylene, which I hand fold and assemble. The shades can either be hung as a pendant or attached to an existing lamp base. The shades are available in two sizes, small and large. Also available in two
colours, natural or white pearl. The table and floor lamp bases are available with either an integrated switch that is located just under the shade or with an on/off switch in the cord. The floor lamp is available with a foot operated on/off switch in the cord.
