I love the idea that adornment goes back to the beginning of human memory. People have always worn objects for status, talismatic reasons and to make themselves appear
more desirable. It is of interest to me to place non-precious materials in a framework that gives them meaning and beauty. I often work with materials such as stone, |
| bone and more recently rubber and old paper print. These I endeavor to incorporate, sometimes together, with metals, to enhance
both, through their relationship in my designs. When I use mediums such as enamel in my work, I tend to treat it as a tool, giving it an organic look, which is more crude than the way enamel is usually treated. The enamel takes on the role of the found pebble or stone, and is worked accordingly. Texture and the feel of a piece as it worn
is also of importance to me, and whatever my reason is for producing a piece, I like there to be room for the owner of the piece to make it their own, with their own interpretation of it. My work often changes in materials and style, but I feel that there is always that love of natural forms and mix of materials that draws my work together. |
